Discover the Best Wine Tours in the Tagus Valley!

We are in the Harvest season from North to South of the country! In the previous article, we went to the Douro Valley to discover the traditions of this important season for the Durians. Today, we are going to focus on the harvest that takes place, in parallel, in the Tagus Valley.

The Tagus area was always known as a wine producing area since the Middle Ages. This is the perfect time to unravel the curiosities of the vineyards and the wine of the Tagus, as well as the techniques and secrets behind the wine production processes.

Curiosities about Tejo Vineyards and Wine

Traditional grape varieties: The Tagus Valley is known for growing a variety of indigenous and international grape varieties. Some of the region's traditional grape varieties include Castelão, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Arinto and Fernão Pires.

Diverse Terroir: The Tagus Valley has a diverse geography, with plains, hills and more rugged terrain. This contributes to a wide variety of soils and microclimates in the region, which influences the production of different styles of wine.

Refreshing white wines: The region is known for producing fresh and fruity white wines, often with a touch of citrus. The Fernão Pires grape variety is one of the Tagus Valley's most emblematic white varieties.

Techniques and secrets

Fermentation: The fermentation process is crucial in wine production. Winegrowers in the Tagus Valley use both modern and traditional techniques to ferment grape must into wine. The temperature and time of fermentation can significantly affect the flavour and structure of the wine.

Ageing: Some Tagus Valley wines are aged in oak barrels, which can give the wine flavours of vanilla, spices and toasted notes.

Blending: Mixing different grape varieties is common in the region to create balanced and complex wines. Winemakers have the skill to choose the grape varieties that best complement each other, resulting in harmonious wines.

Between songs and chants, the days that celebrate the harvest are quite animated. This was not the long-awaited time that precedes the productions of new wine!
