Celebrate World Tree Day with Living Tours.
A great way to welcome Spring.
World Tree or Forest Day is celebrated every year on 21 March.
On this day various tree-planting and reforestation initiatives take place in various parts of the world.
The aim of the commemoration of World Tree Day is to raise awareness among the population of the importance of preserving trees, both in terms of the environmental and ecological balance and the quality of life of citizens.
It is estimated that 1000 adult trees absorb about 6000 kg of CO2 (carbon dioxide).
30% of the Earth's surface is covered by forests, where photosynthesis - the production of oxygen from carbon dioxide - takes place. Forests are so-called the "lungs of the world", not only for their role of maintaining and renewing ecosystems, but also for their importance in strategic areas such as the economy and the production of goods and food.
In this sense Living Tours and the Livingtourians every year carry out actions to plant trees in our Livingtourian forest, taking care of them throughout the year with much love and affection.
This is one of our environmental causes, showing our care for the environment and how we try to reduce our footprint on the planet as little as possible.
Origin of Arbor Day
The celebration of World Arbor Day began on 10 April 1872, in the North American state of Nebraska (USA). Its mentor was the journalist and politician Julius Sterling Morton, who encouraged the orderly planting of trees in Nebraska by promoting "Arbor Day".
Many countries adopted this initiative, and the first "Festival of the Tree" was celebrated in Portugal in 1907, with these celebrations extending mainly during the early period of the 1st Republic until 1917.
In December 1970, as part of the tributes of the European Year of Nature Conservation, the official celebration of "Arbor Day" was resumed, on the proposal of the then General Directorate of Forestry and Aquaculture Services and the Nature Protection League.
The Festival of the Tree became the Festival of the Forest when, in 1971, the FAO established the "World Forest Day" with the aim of raising awareness in the importance of the forest in preserving life on Earth.
The first "World Forest Day" was celebrated in Portugal in 1974, on 21 March, the first day of spring, like many other countries in the northern hemisphere.
