Treating Others As We Like to Be Treated

From a relational perspective of leadership, it is important to look closely at communication between executives and teams.

It's called the golden rule of leadership: don't do to others what we don't like to be done to us.

A good leader, an executive of reference, will treat his team as he would like to be treated, rigorously.

Why is this so important? Because it is about establishing a communication record, without asymmetries, based on reciprocity, that is recognized by everyone and that pleases others.

This communicational record must be clear and transparent. It has to create a good atmosphere and allow people to feel comfortable to express their opinions and make their contribution. There can be no condescension.

Serving the Team is giving it what it needs.

Another leadership maxim: To lead is to serve.

Serving the best interests of the team, whatever the cost.

Serving the team not from the perspective of what the team wants, from the search for the easiest, but from what we consider to be best for it, from what the team needs to flourish.

Just as a father will give his children what he believes is best for them, what he considers that they need to be happy, so executives will try to give to their teams, as a whole, but also individually to each of their employees. , all the conditions for them to reach the maximum of their performance.

These conditions imply rules, limits, discipline, but also reinforcement of self-esteem, communication, transparency.

Listening is the Key to Influence

To achieve a good relationship with teams, executives need to know how to listen.

Listening is not listening! Listening implies wanting to understand the other person's perspective, putting yourself in their shoes, feeling how they feel.

Most of us listen with a concern to respond, not a concern to understand. And this makes all the difference.

Listening means being receptive to the influence of the other in order to influence them too. It does not imply that we are all in permanent agreement, but it does imply that we are open and admit that others may have better ideas than ours.
