The business of being a Father

If you think running a business can be difficult, try raising children. As hard as it is, I have realized that raising children is one of the few things more rewarding than building a company. I was lucky to have started some companies, but I'm much luckier to be the father of two beautiful and wonderful children.

Starting a business is a lot like having a baby. You need to make a lot of plans before the big day arrives, but no matter how prepared you are, something unexpected will inevitably happen. I still remember when we went to maternity hospital to have our children Svador and Bernardo.

Before launching a company, many surprises can happen. In fact, when we runed our first job at Living Tours the van to be used to operate the tour had not arrived due to delays from Mercedes Benz and we had to subcontract a minibus at the last minute. The minibus that arrived was a big 50 seat bus for four tourists only, plus the guide and the driver. But quickly after this setback we managed to rent a 9-seater vehicle until ours was delivered, three months later.

As with a new business, a newborn inevitably takes up all the time from their parents.

Companies inevitably take up all their time at the beginning too. With small and large teams, you must roll up your sleeves and get involved in many different areas. When LivingTours started, I was the marketing professional, sales, reservations, accounting, founder, and secretary! You need to learn new skills quickly. Dig in and perform several new tasks is the best way to learn. In the same way, you do not know how to change a diaper until you do it, you don't know how to create and sell tours and experiences until you try it.

Busy entrepreneurs and new parents also share another common characteristic: sleep deprivation.

Delegating can help regain a little control - and if you do not have fun as an entrepreneur, you should probably try a different job.

As your children grow up, you need to give them the freedom to make mistakes and learn lessons for themselves. With this, they will find their own way in life and continue to grow.

As a parent or entrepreneur, you can never guess what is coming, which is part of the game!

As an animal lover, dogs have always been part of my childhood and Sofia, to complete the family we also have two dogs: Billy and Flora, who came to replace the loss of Scooby.

Anything that you might think can happen will probably happen - and many things that were thought to be impossible will also happen.
The same happens in business, besides raising children. We must accept all of this as a pleasure and a privilege - even diapers!
