Abandonment and Mistreatment of Animals

Animal Abandonment

Every day, an average of 119 dogs and cats are abandoned in Portugal alone

But this scourge unfortunately happens all over the world:

200 million - According to the World Health Organization - WHO, this is the estimated number of homeless animals around the world.

We are all responsible and we can all play an active role in the issue of pet abandonment.

The consequences of abandoning animals, in addition to their welfare being at stake, due to lack of food and health care, animals can suffer and cause accidents. The abandonment of animals can also entail risks to human and animal health due to the possibility of transmitting diseases and/or aggression to people and other animals.

All citizens who find abandoned animals must play an active role by alerting the police authorities or the local authority, so that they can be collected.

Abandoned animals, when collected, are housed in the Official Collection Centers of the Municipalities, where they wait up to 15 days, so that the respective owner can claim them. In cases where these animals are not claimed, they can be adopted, after sterilization, by individuals or animal protection associations duly legalized and that have adequate conditions for their housing.

The decision to acquire a pet implies a commitment to care for it throughout its life, with the obligation to provide adequate shelter, food, veterinary care, exercise, affection and compliance with all legal obligations. of the species, such as registration, licenses, vaccinations, training and sterilization, when applicable.

At Living Tours, we develop several Actions in defense of abandoned animals:

Under our social program, LivingTourianos Com Causa 1X1, where we donate a meal for each participant in our Tours to needy and homeless people in Portugal, we also include in this program an institution to support abandoned animals:

MIDAS Association, this association's main objectives are to welcome, treat and forward animals for adoption, especially dogs and cats.

MIDAS currently has: 174 Animals to Adopt, 2,389 Animals adopted since 2011 and 3,342 Sterilized Animals.

We sponsor Scar and Turrona

This sponsorship ensures that they lack nothing and ensures their well-being until they are adopted by Associação Midas.

This story doesn't end here, these and many other animals are up for adoption at Associação MIDAS

Solidarity Collections

Internally at Living Tours we carry out bimonthly collections of food, clothing, among others, some for needy and homeless people and others for abandoned animals and institutions awaiting adoption.

Volunteering Actions

In addition to these supports, we carry out monthly volunteer actions:

With a full heart, we dedicate ourselves body and soul to each task, we distribute smiles, treats and donations to all those who are special, THE ANIMALS.

It is always very rewarding to spend time with the animals that live in the association while they wait for their adoptive family, including Scar and Turrona, who we sponsor

We help with cleaning, feeding and of course, we play and give lots of necessary treats! Some of these precious animals have been waiting to be adopted for years.

If you're looking for a new furry friend, you can find them here .

Animal Abuse in Portugal

About 10,000 crimes and 17 arrests were registered for abandonment and mistreatment of animals in the last five years, according to PSP and GNR data.

But it is estimated that this scourge is 3 to 5 times greater than the registered numbers, throughout the national territory.

Mistreatment of animals is punished by Law n.º 8/2017, published in the Diário da República on March 3, 2017.

It is essential to report situations of abandonment, mistreatment, negligence or risk. How to proceed?
