International Volunteer Day
Volunteering is an act of citizenship that translates into a set of actions of social and community interest carried out in a disinterested way by people, within the scope of projects, programs and other forms of intervention at the service of individuals, families and the community.
Being a Volunteer is to demonstrate your support for one of the basic principles of solidarity: working together can make the world a better place for everyone. Volunteering benefits society in general and improves people's lives, including those of volunteers themselves.
"Volunteers don't necessarily have time, but they have heart."
Elizabeth Andrew
In 1985, the United Nations (UN) declared December 5th as International Volunteer Day. The aim is to encourage, raise awareness and recognize this type of work. The date is used by several countries in partnership with the UN to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) — a set of goals established by the entity in 2000 for sustainable development. Among them are:
- combating hunger and poverty;
- quality basic education for all;
- gender equality and women's empowerment;
- reduction of infant mortality;
- health improvement for pregnant women;
- combating AIDS, malaria and other diseases;
- guarantee of quality of life and respect for the environment;
- and establishing partnerships for development.
We do many ways to help at Living Tours, all of them important. But being a volunteer is an unforgettable experience, where we create relationships with other people that we are working to create, together, a better world.
Our programs – Livingtourians with a Cause
We have developed several intervention programs that allow us to act in different contexts in parallel, thus enhancing social impact and social cohesion in local communities
- Volunteer actions to help prepare meals and distribute them on the streets to needy and homeless people with various social solidarity institutions;
- Solidarity Box: We regularly carry out campaigns to collect food, clothing, blankets and toys to donate to our local communities through our partner institutions;
- 1 for 1 program, where we donate a meal for each participant on our tours to the needy and homeless in the cities of Porto, Lisbon and Coimbra;
- Volunteering for Beach Cleaning;
A gesture of love ignites a light of hope in the saddest hearts.
Make someone happy, help those in need. Be a volunteer body and soul. All the love in the world in one gesture
Each one contributes according to their possibilities, with what they know and want to do.
Some have more free time, others only have a few hours a week. Some know exactly where or with whom they want to work. Others are ready to help with whatever is needed, where the need is most urgent.
Each commitment made, however, must be fulfilled.
Let's all work to leave a better and fairer world for future generations
There is nothing more rewarding in life than the feeling of helping and contributing to the well-being of those in need!
