MEETING POINT
Hotels in Funchal.
The tour starts from the hotel in Funchal and includes a professional guide. This trail joins the three highest peaks of the island. It begins at Pico Areeiro (1810 m), passing through Pico das Torres (1851 m) and culminating in Pico Ruivo (1862 m). This is a breathtaking walk that involves tunnels, some uphills, and downhills in steps excavated in the rocks, that allow you to appreciate the rock formations of the central mountain range, the endemic vegetation and the birds that are part of this ecosystem.
Along the way, you will find several caves excavated in the volcanic tuff which served as shelter for the shepherd and where the cattle took cover, we can also see several birds and subspecies found only in the archipelago of Madeira, such as the French sparrow (Petronia petronia madeirensis), the finch (Fringilla coelebs madeirensis) and the firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus madeirensis).
For those who like plants, this area is marked by the presence of several endemisms of Madeira, which include the Madeira violet (Viola paradoxa), Madeira grey heather (Erica madeirensis), the rock orchid (Orchis scopolorum), and the Madeira kidney (Anthyllis lemanniana).
On arrival at the top of Pico Ruivo three viewpoints offer panoramic views in all directions of the island. Near the shelter of Pico Ruivo, you will find the PR 1.2 trail, which leads you to Achada do Teixeira, where you can see the "Standing Man", a basaltic rock formation. Then we go down to Achada do Teixeira where our tour ends.
