Curral das Freiras is a lovely village surrounded by huge mountains and right in the heart of the island. Its name has a particular history behind it! By the age of the maritime discoveries, a group of pirates attacks the Santa Clara Convent and the nuns ran away to this little village. Since then was known for this curious phenomenon and for its annual chestnuts festival. A very popular event with lots of entertainment, traditional food and drink.

Visit Câmara de Lobos, an overwhelming little town where the fishing boats are known for its vibrant colors and its traditional drink, poncha. Reviews

pictures without fog
We were lucky and it was not foggy in "Eiro do Serrado" and we could see the magnificent view. The view of the valley is breathtaking. We had free time to take pictures and enjoy every moment. Congratulations to the guide for being so flexible. It was a great tour for the money we paid.

We hadden tijd voor alles
Diogo was onze gids en nam ons mee naar drie verschillende plaatsen. Hij was altijd beschikbaar om al onze vragen te beantwoorden. We hadden tijd om foto's te maken en te verkennen. Onze groep was klein, 8 personen. Het landschap bovenaan is heel, maar heel mooi.

worth it
I went on this half day excursion with my husband and my son. Like everything in Madeira this tour was high up there and the views are stunning. To get here is difficult and only passes a vehicle on the road. It was kinda scary, but in the end it was worth it. The daily routine of drivers and guides is to take this route, so they are already more used to it. The guide explained the whole history of the village of Curral das Freiras and we enjoyed it very much.
