Sustainable Mobility: how can we move around without polluting so much?

We all know that accessibility and an efficient transport system are fundamental to our quality of life, simplifying access to services, opportunities, and social interactions. However, have you ever stopped to think about the negative impact that our travels have?

Did you know that the transport sector is one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions and air pollution? Road transport means (such as cars or buses) represent 70% of total emissions, with the remainder relating to maritime transport and aviation. What about when you travel in your car and get stuck in traffic? Have you ever thought about the time you are wasting, the stress, the noise, the polluted air you are breathing and the costs of fuel and car maintenance?

In this European Mobility Week and Car - Free Day, we take the opportunity to give you some tips for getting around sustainably. Check it out here:

Use public transport

Swap the car for public transport: bus, metro, tram, train. As a general rule, traveling by public transport is more economical than car maintenance and, in environmental terms, the impact is smaller. Did you know that a person traveling by car produces nine times more CO2 than if they made the same journey by train? Furthermore, you can take advantage of the trip to catch up on reading or other things that you wouldn't be able to do if you were driving.
Did you know that you can go to any of the Living Tours agencies by metro, train and bus? Simulate how to get to us on the location maps available on our website, by clicking here

Walk on foot
It's not always possible, but whenever you can, leave the car and walk. This is without a doubt the most ecological, economical and healthy mobility option.
It is also one of the best ways to explore and discover the most picturesque places in cities . Do you doubt it? Join our walking tours in different cities.

Ride a bike
This is a sustainable means of transport! In addition to polluting the environment less, you help reduce traffic, save money on fuel and even exercise. Due to the growing use of bicycles, municipalities have invested more and more in the creation of cycle paths and it is increasingly common to find bicycle racks to park and leave your bicycle safely. At Living Tours, we have a bike rack in the parking lot available to all co-workers.

Ride a motorbike
If you really need a motorized vehicle for your trips, consider a motorbike. Did you know that a 125cc motorcycle produces 65% less CO2 and only needs a third of the fuel that a car uses? Compared to the car, the motorbike can be considered an ecological alternative.

What if you really depend on your car to get around?
We don't always have an alternative to a private car, but we can consider the following:

  • Share transport (carpooling). Be an apologist for carpooling. Organize rides to work, outings with friends and to other activities. It's an excellent way to reduce the number of cars on the roads and share travel costs with other people.

  • Drive slower. Reduce your speed and adopt a driving style that is as efficient as possible. Did you know that by accelerating above 120 km/hour you will increase fuel consumption by around 30%, which means more CO2 emissions and greater environmental pollution? Furthermore, it means a greater expense for your wallet and a greater risk of accidents.

  • Avoid short car trips. When a car engine is cold, it produces more CO2 emissions, that is, more pollution. When using your car, try to carry out several tasks in the same trip instead of making several trips throughout the day. So, in addition to the benefits for the environment, you are saving time and money on travel.

  • Avoid driving during rush hours. Stop-and-go traffic is one of the biggest consumers of fuel and, consequently, of greenhouse gas emissions. Leave home early to avoid rush hours and/or look for alternative routes to areas with greater traffic congestion.

  • Choose an electric car. If you are thinking about changing your car and if you have the possibility, opt for an electric car. If you already have one, try to keep it charged at all times. For charging done at home, try to schedule it outside of the hours when the public electricity grid is most used. At Living Tours, we already have electric vehicles and electric chargers for the fleet and for external visitors' vehicles.

By opting for more sustainable mobility solutions, we are contributing to increasing the quality of the air we breathe, increasing physical activity, less congested urban spaces, saving money and, among others, preserving biodiversity.

These small, individual actions make a significant impact. Share them with your Family and Friends so that together we can improve everyone's quality of life, making our cities and communities more sustainable.
