Full description

Montserrat is a rock formation, located 50 km south-west of Barcelona, traditionally considered the most important and significant mountain in Catalonia. Its importance is so great that, in 1987, Montserrat was declared a Natural Park to guarantee its conservation. Its highest peak has 1236 meters high! You can now imagine the stunning views from the top, right?

This mountain became famous after the miraculous apparition of the Virgin with the baby Jesus in her arms, in one of the caves of the mountain, what immediately created a special phenomenon on the region. Known as "La Moreneta", the image of the Virgin is kept in the Monastery Church. Have the opportunity to visit it!

Due to the legend, the mountain of Montserrat has been very linked with spirituality and one of the greatest pilgrimage sites in Catalonia. The main monastery is located at a height of 720 meters above sea level and today is formed by a community of eighty monks who follow the rule of San Benito.

During the first part of this excursion, you will take a guided tour with our guide who will offer you an explanation of various aspects of the mountain, as well as of the monastery. In addition, the tour includes a tasting of four typical liqueurs from the area and a visit to the Audiovisual Space. Once the guided tour is over, you will have free time to admire the fabulous landscape that Montserrat offers, visit the artisan food market, visit the audiovisual space, and taste the typical liquors.

What to visit in Montserrat?

La Moreneta: the most popular option, both for the locals and the foreigners. Depending on the time of the year there can be a long queue.

Escolanía: one of the oldest Boys Choir in Europe. They sing every day from Monday to Friday, at 1 pm

Museum: a wide variety of archaeological and an art gallery with works from medieval times to avant-garde. The entrance fee to the museum is not included in the tour. Time to visit approximately two hours.

Funicular of Sant Joan and funicular of the Santa Cova: The funiculars offer the possibility of getting to different points of the mountain. The price of the tickets is not included in the tour, and it is recommended to consult the timetable.

Hiking routes: The Mountain has many hiking routes. The routes are long, and it can take hours to finish them. A good option is to walk to the cross of Sant Miguel (approximately 15 minutes away from the monastery), it offers one of the best panoramic views of the mountain and the monastery.

Reviews

Wonderful
Both the tour narrator on the bus and the bus driver were excellent. The bus driver expertly drove up to and back from Montserrat. Montserrat sits in an amazing location atop strangely sculpted mountains. There's a very good museum there, don't miss the introductory 7-minute film. There's a store with gifts and tastings of liqueurs. I recommend it!
