Full description

Begin your full-day tour departing from Barcelona on a comfortable bus to reach the overwhelming Montserrat Mountain

Alongside with your professional guide, you will have the opportunity to visit the Santa Maria monastery, which houses the Romanesque carving of the 12th century, the Verge Moreneta (the Black Madonna). The Benedictine Sanctuary of Montserrat was founded in 1025 and offers a mystical backdrop to the Virgin of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia, who is consecrated in the Royal Basilica of the Monastery. The small monastery soon began to receive pilgrims and visitors who have contributed to the dissemination of stories of miracles and wonders performed by the Virgin.

After this guided visit you will have free time (almost 3 hours) to invest in the typical liqueurs tasting, to visit de audiovisual exhibition, to visit de museum (ticket included if option selected), to buy some food products in the local market, to see the La escolanía de Montserrat choir, to discover new pathways around the mountain and/or to enjoy the fabulous landscape by yourself.

If you choose to enter the audiovisual room, images of the history and creation of the Montserrat monastery are projected. If you choose to listen to one of the oldest boys choir in Europe, “La escolanía de Montserrat”, that dates from the 14th century, they usually have concerts on weekdays at 1 PM, but it is recommended to consult the timetable because the days that they are performing is subject to the school calendar and to special events of the choir and the monastery.

Around 3 PM, will start an exclusive guided visit to the Santa Maria monastery sacristy that was built by the architect Francesc Folguera and consists of a hall, a spacious room with wardrobes and a small apse. In the lobby, there is a sarcophagus and the statue, a bronze by Joaquim Ros, of the Venerable Fra Josep de San Benet, a monk deceased in 1723 with a reputation as a saint. Josep Obiols with biblical allegories of the Eucharist and representations of Christmas, Easter and Pentecost decorate the whole vault, in a concrete idealism.

After this visit, you will have the chance to know the first monastery that was built in the mountain, the Santa Cecilia monastery. This construction is located in a privileged and peaceful place on a natural terrace that offers extraordinary views of the emblematic cliffs of Montserrat. You will enjoy an audio-guided visit to the Romanesque church of the monastery. The interior has been the object of an artistic intervention of the Irish painter Sean Scully. His work made the Santa Cecilia one of the most outstanding sites in the world because of its magnificent fusion of Christianity and avant-garde art.
