Sustainability: the balance between Environment, Society and Economy

Have you heard about sustainability? It's an important concept that involves caring for our planet and people in a way that doesn't harm our ability to live well in the future.

According to the United Nations , sustainability is the ability to meet our needs in the present without harming the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In other words, sustainability recognizes that certain resources are limited and must be used consciously, to ensure the continuity and evolution of current and future generations.

Globally, the balance between economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection is the engine for sustainable development.

Sustainability thus considers three main pillars: environmental, social and economic.

1. Environmental Sustainability : This dimension is related to the way we take care of our planet, the Earth. It's about preserving natural resources, such as water, air, soil and biodiversity, so that they can continue to sustain us. Some environmental sustainability actions include reducing waste, saving energy, saving water, using clean energy sources and protecting natural habitats.

2. Social Sustainability: This pillar focuses on people and communities. It is about ensuring that all people have fair opportunities and equal access to essential resources such as health, education and work. Social sustainability also involves respecting human rights, promoting diversity and building fair and inclusive societies.

3. Economic Sustainability: Here, we enter the economy. Economic sustainability means managing financial resources responsibly and over the long term. It's about creating businesses and financial systems that are stable, prosperous and benefit society as a whole. This includes investing in clean technologies, supporting ethical businesses, and balancing profits with social and environmental concerns.

Why is Sustainability Important?
Sustainability is crucial because our actions affect the environment, people and the economy. If we do not take care of these three pillars, we can harm the quality of life not only of future generations, but also the one we are living.

How do we achieve sustainability?
This is the great challenge that is becoming increasingly urgent. Achieving sustainability begins with a change in mentality , where the well-being of everyone and the planet is valued above immediate profit.

We talk about global problems that require global solutions. In 2015, the UN established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for the 2030 Agenda. These are guidelines and goals that seek to establish more sustainable methods of promoting well-being and global development (environmental, social and economic). According to Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary-General, (… ) “They are a list of things to do on behalf of the people and the planet, and a plan for success”.

Achieving sustainability is a continuous and multifaceted effort that involves all sectors of society. Each of us can play a role by making informed choices and supporting sustainable initiatives. Now that you know the three pillars of sustainability and know that there is a list of actions to achieve common goals, you can see how small actions, such as saving water, recycling or supporting socially responsible companies, can make a big difference. We can all contribute to a more sustainable and healthy world by carefully balancing the environment, society and economy.

It's a long and challenging road, but absolutely necessary. Let's work together to make our world a better place for current and future generations!
