Chalet of the Countess of Edla: The Romantic Paradise of Sintra
When we say that there are many secrets to discover on a visit to the Pena Palace, we are not lying. The same we say about Pena Park, which surrounds the Palace. It is in the 200 hectares of the Pena Park that we will find the beautiful Chalet of the Countess of Edla, a true "nest of love".
Between 1864 and 1869, D. Fernando II, the creator of the Pena Palace, and his future wife, Elise Hensler, the Countess of Edla and a Swiss-American opera singer, decided to create a private Villa to serve as a romantic refuge for the couple. The Chalet was inspired by the Alpine Chalets that were much loved and admired at the time. On the outside, a strong yellow, which blends perfectly with the exotic vegetation of the Garden. The interiors are very well worked and rich, with detailed stuccos, frescoes and several elements in cork, and copper.
Unfortunately, the Chalet of the Countess of Edla was destroyed after a fire, in 1999. However, given the high artistic and cultural value, the building and the gardens were fully recovered, remaining faithful to the initial project.
Undoubtedly, it is a place of great romantic sensibility. We could try to describe the Chalet of the Countess d'Edla in the most reliable way possible, but the best is to see with your own eyes the magic of this place and try to feel the love that once lived and was shared there.
The ticket for one adult values 9.50€, but there are also discounts for seniors, children, and families.
