Main Attractions you must See in Gerês

If there is a destination that deserves the admiration of nature lovers and landscape beauty, it is undoubtedly Gerês. Located in the north of Portugal, Gerês is a true natural jewel, offering a variety of stunning attractions for all those who venture into its lands.

Explore some of the most fascinating attractions that make Gerês a unique and unforgettable destination to visit.

Waterfalls

Gerês is blessed with an abundance of waterfalls and cascades that create scenery of rare beauty. The Arado Waterfall is one of the most famous, with its crystal clear waters falling from an impressive height into a natural pool inviting for an invigorating dip. It can be accessed via a trail that offers stunning panoramic views.

The Tahiti Waterfall, with its exotic appearance, transports us to tropical lands, while the Pincães Waterfall impresses with a majestic waterfall whose soothing sound calms the soul of visitors. Similarly to the Arado Waterfall, access to both waterfalls involves a hike that allows visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the region.

In addition to these, the Leonte Waterfall, the Portela do Homem Waterfall and the Fafião Waterfall stand out. It is very important to study and plan the accesses to each of the waterfalls before visiting them.

Trails and Walks

For hiking and trekking enthusiasts, Gerês is a true paradise. There are numerous trails that allow you to explore the wild beauty of the mountains, valleys and forests. The "Rota do Miradouro da Pedra Bela" offers spectacular views over the valley of the Cávado River, while the "Trilho da Preguiça" takes us to one of the most impressive waterfalls in the region.

The "Currais Trail" allows us to enjoy breathtaking landscapes, which combine the green tones of the vegetation with the characteristic rocks of the region. In the same direction, the Santa Maria das Júnias Monastery Trail, the Geira Romana and Arrieiros Trail, the Poço Azul and Poço Negro Trail and the "Miradouro dos Carris" Trail are also popular and unique.

Make sure you choose trails according to your level of experience and physical fitness, and always respect the park's guidelines to preserve nature and ensure your safety.

Viewpoints with Panoramic Views

The viewpoints of Gerês are real treats for the eyes. From the Pedra Bela viewpoint, already mentioned above, the scenery is breathtaking. From these privileged points, it is possible to contemplate stunning valleys, majestic peaks and a green immensity that seems to have no end.

In addition, there is the Boneca Viewpoint, which offers an incredible view of the Homem River Valley and the Arado Waterfall in the background, and the Ermida Viewpoint, which offers spectacular views of the Caldo River and the surrounding vegetation, being especially impressive at sunset.

Similarly, the "Miradouro dos Carris", the highest point in Gerês in Portugal, which stands at around 1200 metres above sea level, offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the Vale do Homem, Pico Nervoso and the Serra do Gerês. It is a popular spot for hiking and paragliding.

When visiting the viewpoints, bring comfortable walking shoes, water and food, don't forget your camera and, if you visit the viewpoint during the summer, avoid going during the hottest hours.

Traditional Villages

Besides the natural wonders, Gerês is also home to charming villages that seem to have stood still in time. Soajo, with its granite granaries and traditional houses, is an excellent example of the typical architecture of the region.

In terms of unique and representative flora, we have the Black Oak, a resistant tree adapted to mountainous conditions and poor soils, the Yew, the Holm Oak, the Wild Vine and the Gerês Lily, a species of lily endemic to Gerês, characterised by its yellow flowers and narrow leaves. Many of these species are endemic to the region or are adapted to the specific conditions of the park, contributing to the rich biodiversity of the area.
