This exciting journey has its first stop will be Braga, the Capital of Minho, and then we will discover the historic city of Guimarães. Prepare your cameras and come with us to explore two of the most important cities for the History of Portugal!

Our tour starts in the direction of Braga. Along the way, enjoy the lush green landscape of mountains, valleys and rivers. Braga is a deeply religious city and this guided tour allows you to visit: the oldest Cathedral of Portugal, and the Bom Jesus Sanctuary (UNESCO). Exciting, right?

Later, we will find the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, one of the greatest highlights of this tour. Famous for its endless stairs and Baroque details, this place will definitely impress you! Not only a religious monument but also a truly romantic and relaxing place, with stunning views of the city. Here, Nature is privileged and protected with the utmost affection.

It's now time to visit the magnificent Cathedral of Braga (also known as Sé de Braga), a monument that combines three different styles: Romanesque, Manueline and Baroque. It is the oldest Cathedral in Portugal - it was even built several decades before the founding of the country! Undoubtedly, this imposing Cathedral is the greatest landmark of Braga.

We will walk through the historic centre of Braga and discover some of the most important streets and gardens of the city, such as the Santa Barbára Garden, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in Portugal.

We will take a break in the historic centre of Braga to enjoy a tasty traditional lunch (optional). Relax and appreciate this time.

After lunch, we will drive to Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal and a World Heritage Site, since 2001. This was the city where the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, was born. The history of Guimarães is related to the foundation of the national identity and the Portuguese language.

We will have the opportunity to enter and explore the Castle of Guimarães, the 10th-century national symbol. From the outside, its medieval structure looks impressive; on the inside, you can have stunning views over the city. Then, we will continue passing through the Palace of the Bragança Dukes and the São Miguel Church.

Observe the imposing statue of D. Afonso Henriques and walk through the Martins Sarmento Square. To end this short walking tour, you will discover the Santa Maria Street, the City Hall, the Santiago Square, and the Senhora da Oliveira Church.

Guimarães is an authentic example of the evolution of a medieval city throughout History!

Good basic tour

We saw all the basics we expected to and the bus was very comfortable and only held 30 people. The most annoying part was that the tour was in both Spanish and English and the Spanish information was always given first. This meant the English speakers had a lot of waiting time. One of the other tourists asked the guide if English could be first in the afternoon but he refused, claiming it made no difference but it did as we were always waiting.

Driver was stupendous dealing with those sharp narrow bends. Leader was good but sometimes difficult to understand his English due to accent. Braga was great but visit to Sanctuary was short. otherwise ok. Lunch was terrible. Both the fish (or boiled potatoes with a hint of cod I must say) and meat ( a bit of tripe with a kilo of beans) were awful. Desert too unimpressed. Visit to Guimaraes was lovely. At present trip to castle is poor due to huge conservation works.

I really enjoyed this day out and chose the lunch option which was well worth the additional cost. Paulo was our guide and Tiego our driver.. Both lovely and friendly. Paulo was very knowledgeable with a few jokes included in his commentary. Personally I would of liked longer at Bom Jesus and less time in Braga but others may find the time split to their liking. I would certainly recommend this trip x

We had the pleasure of a tour with Paulo and Tiago. It was a wonderful, informative and comfortable tour. We saw quite a bit in both cities. And there were enough breaks to use the restroom or stretch your legs. I enjoyed their knowledge and they were beyond friendly. I wasn’t a super fan of the lunch that was included but that’s because I ate way too much bacalahao. I think going on your lunch is ok if you take this tour. I highly recommend!

From the start we had a great experience to Braga and Guiamaraes thanks to our guide Tiago. He was accommodating, knowledgeable and witty. Braga and Guiamaraes are must sees! So much so I want to go back to the region. Both villages are charming with interesting histories: The tour included a delicious lunch with wine. The people in both towns were friendly. When in Portugal I suggest buying from the shops and vendors as it is less expensive than Lisboa.

We are grateful that despite the low season this tour still took place. The group that had gathered for the day consisted of only 6 tourists. I took this tour on, 15th September with Joao who did an excellent job of conducting it in both English and Spanish. There only were 7 of us, so it felt like a private excursion. Guimaraes and Braga Tour on lovely Minho

A very nice day trip from Porto with a lovely and knowledgeable guide Claudia. The stunning Bom Jesus Sanctuary was the highlight of Braga, though the views from the Sameiro Sanctuary were beautiful as well. Would have preferred less time at Sameiro Sanctuary and Cathedral and a little time to walk around Braga either before or after our nice lunch with wine. Guimaraes was more interesting to me with its castle and medieval streets. Would have liked to visit the palace instead of just walking by.

Need a tour guide who can speak more fluently in English

We had a group of 7 and they took us to Braga and Guimaraes in a nice van. The van however is comfortable for no more than 6 pax though. Our 7th passenger had to sit in front with the tour guide who doubles as the driver. Our guide for the day was Marcos. Multi-tasking with driving and giving a tour summary at the same time is not easy. It is made worse when the person's grasp of English is not as good, which is the case for Marcos. Our tour was delivered in both English and Spanish. Marcos did the minimum on the tour and I found his stories lacking in content. At some instances, we had to prompt him to delivery explanations. He seems like a serious person and hardly smiled during the whole trip. Overall, the destinations were great but the whole experience could have been excellent with a better tour guide.

I went to this tour with the same agency. There were a lot of history to absorb during the one-day trip. The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus was amazing. Jorge spent his time fairly within the Spanish/Portuguese and English-Speaking groups explaining all the important information about the sites we were visiting. We highly appreciated his effort to introduce us about the history of some of the Portugal sites.

The Guimarães/Braga tour was excellent in spite of the rain and the cold weather. The two towns and their churches are exquisite. Andre, our guide was delightful. Extremely knowledgeable and professional,he had a lot to tell the group about the history of Portugal and its devotion to Catholicism. Nous sommes de grands voyageurs, assez indépendants et votre système de voiture 8 places pour faire connaître, Guimares & Braga,nous convenait tout à fait. Cela permet de faire connaissance avec les autres passagers car c’est toujours enrichissant l’échange intellectuel. Je tiens à féliciter notre guide MIGUEL pour les raisons suivantes : - Gentillesse & amabilité. - Passionné par son Pays et ses connaissances très pointues de l’histoire du Portugal. - Conducteur sérieux. - Changement de langue avec une facilité déconcertante (Anglais, Français). - Toujours prêt à répondre à une question des passagers. Vraiment BRAVO à Miguel pour le métier qu’il pratique avec conviction. Nous avons gouté la Franchechina, très copieux pour le soir. La prochaine fois on essaiera de manger l’autre spécialité de Porto les tripes. Ce sera l’occasion de revoir « Los tripeiros ». The day truly was fantastic!

For our final full day in Portugal, we went with Living Tours ([email protected]) to Guimaraes and Braga. Both are charmingly chic towns, surrounded by lush forests. The Castle of Guimaraes is the principal medieval castle in this northern principality of Portugal. It was built under the orders of Mumadona Dias in the 10th century to defend the monastery from attacks by Moors and Norsemen. Readily, one’s imagination darts back to centuries ago as one climbs on sturdy walls and calls to nearby friends to rush forth with needed reinforcements to ward off an attack. All proves well and one is victorious in battle so it is time to head to town for a bit of shopping and eating. Then it is time to drive on to Braga, especially to visit its cathedral, the oldest in the country, built in the 12th century by the parents of Portugal’s first King. Bom Jesus do Monte in the town’s outskirts cannot be missed. Is name means Good Jesus of the Mount. The Sanctuary is a notable example of pilgrimage sites with a monumental Baroque stairway that climbs 116 meters. The day proved to be a perfect day, in every excessive possible way, of history, beauty, culture, and religion.

Great tour with lot of learning

The tour to Braga and Guimaraes with Paola on February 3, 2019 was really great. She tweaked the program a little bit taking the weather into consideration so we saw everything in the most beautiful weather. She is very knowledgeable and also a great personality who is easy to chat with. The included lunch was sumptuous and the restaurant catered with no problem also for a vegetarian guest. This tour is highly recommended and even for those who do not like to walk too much as there is little walking involved and even most of that is downhill.

Excellent Braga and Guimares tour

I took this tour on Monday, January 27 with Goncalves, who did an excellent job of conducting it in both English and Portuguese. There only were five of us, so it felt like a private excursion. Goncalves was extremely knowledgeable about the historical and religious significance of these beautiful cities. We all had a wonderful time, including a delicious lunch in Braga. I highly recommend your tours to anyone exploring Portugual.
