The ex-libris of Porto: Torre dos Clérigos

The Clérigos Tower is considered the ex-libris of the city of Porto. The tower can be seen almost throughout the city, has 6 floors and 75 meters tall, making it the tallest monument of Porto.

The access staircase to the top to admire the panoramic view of Porto has 225 steps.

Designed by Nicolau Nasoni, one of the most emblematic works in the artist's life, it's an example of the Baroque style in Portugal and has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

As decoration can be observed the saints, the balustrades and the cornices. At the time of its construction, the tower served as an orientation for the vessels that sailed in the Douro River.

Nicolau Nasoni developed a large part of his works in Portugal, and in the project of the Clérigos Tower began not to receive any remuneration for the construction, but wanted to be buried in the church when he died.

Climbing the Torre dos Clérigos may not be easy for those with reduced mobility, however, the organization has opened a room that can recreate the feeling of being at the top of the building. The images emitted are in real time and can produce the feel of tower height.

The reward after the 225 steps is spectacular. At the top of the tower, you can see the 360º Porto, the color of the roofs, the Douro River, the Cathedral of Porto, the gardens of downtown, and the sea line in Foz.

The Clérigos Tower can be visited every day from 09 a.m. to 7 p.m. With the following exceptions: 24/12 - 09 a.m - 2 p.m. || 25/12 - 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. || 31/12 - 09 a.m. to 2 p.m || 01/01 - 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Do you know that...

The Clérigos Tower was climbed (without any equipment / protective material) by two acrobats, to promote a brand of biscuits? The two Galician artists managed to climb the tower 75 meters high.

We recommend that you do not try to repeat this feat, however, you can always enjoy some of our tours.
