Full description

Founded in 1560 by D. Álvaro de Castro, State Counselor of King D. Sebastião, this historic gem came to adorn the Serra de Sintra. At the time of its founding, it was given the name of Santa Cruz Convent of the Serra de Sintra and given to Franciscan friars.

The Capuchos Convent, or "Cork Convent" as it is also known, makes a difference in the poverty of architectural and decorative elements. The cork flooring and adornments also stand out, complementing the natural element and helping to insulate against the cold of the saw.

It was built following a minimalist philosophy, giving priority to spiritual improvement. Small in size, it fits perfectly into the environment, thus respecting harmony with nature.

The simplicity of the convent was such that King D. Filipe I of Portugal even commented: "Of all my kingdoms, there are two places that I really appreciate, El Escorial for its richness and the convent of Santa Cruz for such poor.".

It has the peculiarity of having the rooms and doors very small because all the monks that were here, were in penance or promise and walked bent. Nowadays it is only possible to wander through the remains of the Franciscan convent.

The visit to the convent is the perfect excuse to walk the mountain trails and breathe fresh air. The forest remarkably represents the endogenous flora of Sintra, having been preserved and cherished by the convent's religious for centuries. Its state of conservation consolidates the natural importance of this peculiar sanctuary, which is the Serra de Sintra.

Franciscans legacy
The order of the Franciscans left some important places in Portugal. The capuchins convent in Sintra it´s one of them. It combines austerity (poverty vows), with the close relation to the nature so close from the message of the founder S. Francis of Assis.
