The Queluz National Palace is nicknamed Portuguese Versailles, due to its vast architectural richness and French and Italian influences that marked the 18th century court in Portugal. The National Palace and Queluz Gardens are a perfect example of the opulence and splendor of the time. They also illustrate the evolution of the taste of the Court, in a period marked by Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism.
The interior of the palace stands out for its decorated rooms and halls such as the Throne Room (used for receptions and large parties), the Music Room (one of the oldest rooms in the palace), the Chapel (with a single marble nave and covered with precious stones), the Lanternim Room, the Princess' Rooms, the Dining Room (which includes the palace's porcelain exhibition), among others.
Travel back and discover the rich history of Queluz Palace and the beauty of its gardens. The court used to use these green spaces for games, fireworks and other recreational events. In the gardens, you will find baroque fountains, stone carvings, the medal lake (the largest lake in the garden) and the tiled canal - the largest open-tiled surface.
The Palace, initially conceived as a summer residence, represents a strong link between Brazil and Portugal since it was the privileged leisure and entertainment space of the Royal Family, which inhabited it until its departure to Brazil following the French invasions.
Currently, the palace is used to host galas and concerts due to the acoustics of the music room and has programs created for children and families. It is also possible to rent space for events such as parties, games, and puzzles. One of the wings of the Palace of Queluz, the Dona Maria Pavilion is currently the exclusive space for foreign heads of state visiting Portugal.
Outside the Palace you will find the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, which aims to teach horse riding, refine practices and disseminate Portuguese equestrian art. In its facilities are held shows open to the public and official presentations. The school recovers the tradition of Picaria Real, an equestrian academy of the 18th century Portuguese court, and uses exclusively Lusitanian horses from the Alter Stud Farm. Although the horses are in the Queluz Palace Gardens, regular performances to the public are held at the Henrique Calado Picadeiro, in Calçada da Ajuda, Lisbon. Queluz National Palace has the only national library dedicated exclusively to equestrian art.
