Travel back in time to the days of the Roman Empire by touring the beautiful city of Tarragona in Costa Dorada. Being the former capital of ‘Hispania Citerior’, one of three Roman provinces in the Iberian Peninsula, Tarragona holds over 2,000 years of history to explore.
Our expert guide will pick you up on a comfortable private transport and head to the ancient Roman city of Tarraco. Discover a time when gladiators, centurions, mighty legions and ruthless emperors wrote the mythical and bloody history of the Roman Empire.
Tarragona is 100 km (60 miles) south of Barcelona in Costa Dorada, known for its crystal clear waters and golden sandy beaches. Tarragona’s historical centre, with its colourful and narrow streets, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The city is also home to one of the best preserved Roman archaeological sites in Spain.
Before entering the ancient “Tarraco” with our guide, the group will stop just outside its entrance to marvel at the Les Ferreres Aqueduct. This spectacular example of engineering ahead of its time, and known as 'The Devil’s Bridge', was built by the Romans and is 217 m long and 26 m high.
On the walking tour that follows, you will discover the preserved remains of the ancient Roman civilization. Tread the ancient walls surrounding the city and visit one of the best-preserved circuses in Europe, hiding under 19th century buildings. Notice how the traces from the ancient Roman Forum, which has served as the city’s centre for 2,000 years, blend with modern day Tarragona.
Then we will arrive at the stunning Amphitheatre, on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. During the 2nd century, this was the civilians’ entertainment centre, a setting for bloody gladiatorial battles and circus acts with wild animals.
The tour will finish at the “Mediterranean Balcony”. Our guide will explain how the citie's proximity to the Sea has affected the history of “Tarraco” for thousands of years. This is no doubt a really special viewpoint, from here you will have the chance to enjoy beautiful views of the historical city and the sea stretching forth toward the horizon in the distance.
