After picking you up at your hotel in Santander, we will travel to Puente Viesgo, where Monte Castillo is located to visit the famous caves of "El Castillo" and "Las Monedas". This is a very important place within the cave art, since in this mountain there are four caves declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2008.
The Cave of "El Castillo" was discovered in 1903 by Hermilio Alcalde del Río and its paintings are considered among the oldest preserved in the world. Famous are the silhouettes of hands in negative that according to archaeologists belong to more than 50 different people, most of them women, also one of the oldest representations of a constellation and representations of the fauna that coexisted with the successive human groups that inhabited the cave. The bone remains studied to date indicate that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens cohabited in this cave, something unique in prehistory.
Although the cave of the Coins does not have such a variety of pictorial periods, it offers us beautiful silhouettes drawn in charcoal of various animals from the Magdalenian period. This cave also has a high geological value, so we will also enjoy the play of colors and shapes that will give us see their stalactites, stalagmites, washes, flags, etc...
Our next stop will be to visit the new Interpretation Center of Cave Art, an ideal visit to complement the visit to the caves and that will help us to understand even better the origin and development of cave art.
Finally, we will take a short walk through Puente Viesgo to visit its greenway, the charming Pas river, its historic town hall and church, as well as the Puente Viesgo spa, which has contributed so much to the development of this small inland town.
If you come to Cantabria and you like rock art, this is a must visit.
