We will depart from Santander towards the village of Santillana del Mar, which is known to be as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. This village built in the Middle Ages is one of the best-known cultural and tourist centres of Cantabria.
You will love its cobbled streets and stone houses built between the XIV and XVIII centuries. We will walk along its narrow streets until reaching its Plaza Mayor and its Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana that you will have the opportunity to visit. Afterward, you will enjoy some free time to do so some shopping before continuing our tour.
Our next stop will be in the Altamira Museum, where you will visit the “Neocave” (this is a scale replica of the “room of paintings” of the Altamira Cave). This cave was declared World Heritage by Unesco in 1985 due to the quality and quantity of its cave paintings dated as from 35,600 years ago.
The cave stands as one of the most important pictorial and artistic cycles of prehistoric paintings in the world. To protect its preservation, the entrance to the original cave is limited to only 5 people per week, randomly chosen on Fridays. This is the main reason why a replica of the cave was created, however, you will love this tour because it is as real as the original.
