Full description

On this private tour to Óbidos, Alcobaça, Batalha and Fátima, you decide where to go and what to see.

We suggest starting with Óbidos, a medieval village conquered from the moors by the first Portuguese king D. Afonso Henriques, in 1148. Centuries later, the king D. Dinis gifted Óbidos to his wife, Queen Isabel, as a wedding present. From then on, the region became a source of income to every Portuguese queen. Its defensive walls crowned by the Moorish castle, make this village one of the best example of an English medieval fortress. For this reason, it’s part of the Templar Castles in Portugal.

Next, we recommend a visit to the Batalha monastery, declared in 2017 World Heritage by UNESCO. The monastery was requested to be built in 1386 by the king D. João I, as a thank you to the Virgin Mary for the victory over Spain, in the Battle of Aljubarrota. This Dominican monument, from the Order of Saint Dominick, was built through the reign of seven Portuguese kings and is an example of the late Portuguese gothic architecture, or Manueline style, and in 2007 was elected one of Portugal’s Seven Wonders.

If the time available allows so, you can also choose to visit the Alcobaça monastery, the first monument solely constructed following the gothic architectural style, in Portuguese land. Considered as World Heritage by UNESCO, it’s also one of Portugal’s Seven Wonders.

To make this the perfect day away from Lisbon, your next stop should be Fátima, one of the world’s leading pilgrimage destinations. The Fátima Sanctuary is without a doubt the most famous Marian sanctuary in the world dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. In the “holy city”, we recommend a visit to the Chapel of the Apparitions, where you can see the Crown of Our Lady of Fatima with one of the bullets that struck Pope John Paul II in the 1981 attack, and the Basilica of Fatima. Take the opportunity to get to know the history of the Apparitions of the Virgin Mary of Fatima to the three little shepherds Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, in 1917. Don't miss the Church of the Holy Trinity, which is of more modern construction.

In the Shrine of Fatima, don’t miss the fragment of the Berlin Wall, donated by a Portuguese immigrant in Germany at the time of the fall of the wall.

Reviews

We really enjoyed the service
We chose this company by recommendation of our friends. We then decided to book several private tours in Lisbon through them. It's the best way to know the region because you can customize your trip. All the guides that we had were great and provided plenty of information. Their cars are new and very comfortable. The overall experience was great.
