The starting point of this half day off-road tour is the Pico de Barcelos, where the panoramic view over the bay of Funchal will leave you breathless. This terrace located in the Santo António parish, dates back from 1950 and is 355 meters high.
Next we will leave the city and head to the mountains in an off-road vehicle, where you’ll find the best views, swapping the blue ocean for a celestial blue sky. We’ll stop at the most important viewpoints, including one of the two that give us a preview of the town of Curral das Freiras, the star of this tour.
This little village at the bottom of the valley holds a typical Madeiran landscape, attracting tourists from all over the world who marvel at the amazing mountain scenery.
You’ll find a variety of regional products, from pastries to liquors, each and every one of them being unique and can only be found there. The main activity in the valley is agriculture, so the people here live of the land and of the handcrafted products they sell.
It is believed that the parish got the name Curral das Freiras (Nuns’ Valley) due to its occupation by the Santa Clara nuns from Funchal, in 1566, who were hiding from the French corsairs when they attacked the capital.
This tour will show you the best panoramic views and a simple way of life. Enjoy a local pastry accompanied by a glass of liquor, while relaxing surrounded by nature and explore the mountain side in an off-road vehicle.
