Full description

The starting point of this half day off-road tour is the Pico de Barcelos, where the panoramic view over the bay of Funchal will leave you breathless. This terrace located in the Santo António parish, dates back from 1950 and is 355 meters high.

Next we will leave the city and head to the mountains in an off-road vehicle, where you’ll find the best views, swapping the blue ocean for a celestial blue sky.  We’ll stop at the most important viewpoints, including one of the two that give us a preview of the town of Curral das Freiras, the star of this tour.

This little village at the bottom of the valley holds a typical Madeiran landscape, attracting tourists from all over the world who marvel at the amazing mountain scenery

You’ll find a variety of regional products, from pastries to liquors, each and every one of them being unique and can only be found there. The main activity in the valley is agriculture, so the people here live of the land and of the handcrafted products they sell.

It is believed that the parish got the name Curral das Freiras (Nuns’ Valley) due to its occupation by the Santa Clara nuns from Funchal, in 1566, who were hiding from the French corsairs when they attacked the capital.

This tour will show you the best panoramic views and a simple way of life. Enjoy a local pastry accompanied by a glass of liquor, while relaxing surrounded by nature and explore the mountain side in an off-road vehicle.

An extraordinary guide like I've never seen
Congrats to Nuno for the great work and the great person he is. Our morning was made by him, and the quality of information he can get through. I felt I was getting to know Madeira with someone who lives there. I knew Madeira as a local. This is a tour unlike any other. The panoramic views we went to were extraordinary. I've never seen anything like it. My wife is a biologist and was impressed by Nuno's knowledge of fauna and flora on the island of Madeira. During this tour I felt that this guide has love for what he does and gives himself with an open heart and soul. We taste the liqueur in a traditional pastry and enjoy to relax in nature. Thanks for everything.

Full day visit with Nuno. He is a very entertaining guide, and helped us discover the flora of Madeira in a very cool way. Our tour was in English but with us went three French. The guide spoke both languages very well and paid attention to both groups. Always translated all the information in both languages. Pico de Barcelos left us open-mouthed. There are other viewpoints that we passed during the tour and they are all fantastic. We actually saw a lot of things, hard to explain everything here, but it's worth the trip! Thank you Nuno!
