Discover Jewish Porto and walk through the streets where a community was born and developed that is supposed to have emerged even before the foundation of Portugal. Start this walk in the city centre of Porto and follow the expansion of the city as you become familiar with the places that were marked by Jewish influence, while our guide explains to you the importance of the Jews in the commerce of the city of Porto and in Portugal.
The first synagogue in Porto existed in what is now the street of Santana and, as the city developed, the Jewish community spread towards the river. From Pena Ventosa (centre of Porto) to the famous Ribeira district, imagine yourself in the medieval city, as you walk along the oldest streets and see what remains of the city walls and other medieval buildings. The city's Jewish quarter was located right in the heart of the borough, which in the 12th century was close to the Cathedral, in the area now bordered by the ruins of the Monchique Convent, the Torre dos Clérigos, the Cathedral (Sé), the Porto Customs House and the Ribeira square and tunnel - and where some Jewish altars remain, on private properties.
Learn about the role played by Jews during the period of the discovery on a walk with a professional guide, and how Pope Gregory IX began the persecution of religious sects that professed practices different from those recognized as Christian were considered heretics. Learn about the history behind the three centuries of the Inquisition.
Finish this walk in the Ribeira square and the adjacent streets, where the renowned Jews once lived: the physicists, the goldsmiths, the great merchants.
