The Guggenheim Museum is located in the center of Bilbao. Situated on the Nervión River, in what used to be an industrial part of Bilbao, the museum changed the city and turned the once dying Basque capital into a modern metropolis.
Meet our private official tour guide at the group entrance to the museum and enjoy a guided visit to the Guggenheim's art collection. Discover the temporary and permanent exhibitions in the museum during your 1:30-hour tour.
The glittering titanium-clad museum was designed by Frank Gehry, an award-winning Canadian architect. Once inside, marvel at masterpieces by Joseph Beuys, Francesco Clemente, Jenny Holzer, Richard Serra, Yves Klein, and Jeff Koons. This iconic building is one of those rare works of contemporary architecture with modern styling and structure.
Learn more about Expressionist art movements from your private tour guide. See one of the Guggenheim’s most iconic pieces, the “Maman” by Louise Bourgeois, a giant spider made from bronze, marble and stainless steel that stands just outside the museum and, at nine meters tall, towers over visitors. It means the protective nature of mothers, as the spider tries to protect the sac of eggs attached to her stomach and it was a tribute to the artist’s mother.
Discover the guard dog known as Puppy, a flower statue guarding the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum. Always attentive, the 12.4-meter-tall Scottish white-furred dog has been welcoming visitors for nearly two decades. Jeff Koons created a work based on the 18th-century formal European garden.
