This tour will show the historical importance of the Douro Region, not only for the wine-making process but also for the Portuguese identity!

Travel comfortably towards the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An enchanted valley, where the green and the gold blend perfectly with the river course. Undoubtedly, it can be said that the Douro Valley is one of the most beautiful areas of the world - feel the Nature in its purest state!

As you will learn on this full-day guided tour, the Douro Region has enormous importance for the wine culture for its outstanding wines, including Port Wines. For more than 2.000 years, Port Wine has been produced in the Douro by traditional landholders.

Our first stop is in Amarante. This city became very important after Saint Gonçalo's arrival (1187-1259) - one of the most renowned saints in Christian history. He settled himself here after his pilgrimage through Rome and Jerusalem, making this city an important religious stop in Portugal. You may visit the convent and church, but also observe its beautiful bridge over the Tamega river or explore its beautiful historic center.

Our day will continue to one of the most surprising spots of this tour: the Galafura viewpoint. Also known as São Leonardo da Galafura viewpoint, this place will take your breath away. From the top of its 640 meters, you will have a privileged view over the Douro river and the surrounding landscape. We promise you that this is one of the greatest highlights of this tour.

After all the contemplation, it's time for a traditional lunch. Have the opportunity to taste the best of the Douro's gastronomy.

The tour continues to Pinhão, one of the most beautiful and charming villages of this region. Stop for a 45 minutes panoramic relaxing cruise over the Douro river waters. Observe the imposing natural views and the gorgeous vineyards. Enjoy!

Rosa and Emanuel were simply amazing. Rosa took care of all the guests and made sure our dietary needs were taken care and gave very good information of sites visited. Emanuel was great navigating narrow streets with great skill. He was very knowledgeable about Porto Culture and added important references to Rosa’s narration. Grâce à leur professionnalisme, à leurs compétences avérées et à leurs constantes attentions ce qui aurait pu être juste un tour touristique s est transformé en une journée de rêve. Onofre a pris du temps avec chacun pour répondre à toutes les questions, devancer nos attentes et s assurer que tout nous convenait. Marco est un chauffeur très attentif avec une excellente conduite. Et le programme de la journée était parfait… découverte de l arrière pays, de la vallée du Duero, dégustation de grands Porto, tour de bateau et retour par une route dévoilant à nouveau de superbes paysages. Je recommande fortement cette excursion qui permet de sortir de Porto. Bravo à tous

Lovely tour with guide Tiago

We’ve had a special tour - Douro Valley Historical and Wine Tour- Ancient villages, Winery, Cruise and Lunch - full of information, interesting, fun and relaxing. It was a lovely day trip. I felt like I was with friends (even we’ve just met when start the excursion) and Tiago presented us the places with their history and stories well documented and in a nice and funny way, we asked a lot o questions and he gave all the answers. I strongly recommend this tour (we’ve had history and wine tasting as is the name of tour) and I think that the experience with Tiago (the guide) was perfect!

David was an amazing tour guide who provided a lot of information, history, and laughter to the trip. Unfortunately the driver was extremely rude to our group (verbally chastised us for being slightly tardy when a child had to use the restroom). Further more the driver drove recklessly through the hilly terrain causing many of us to feel sick.

Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens) all really enjoyed the tour. There were 25-30 of us - a mixture of French, English, American and Canadian - and our guide Mario did a great job explaining everything in 2 languages. This was an easy way to see the Douro valley in a day. Pedro and José were both great. The whole tour was done in both French and English by Pedro which was impressive! Erg mooie tour, gezellige gids Paul en chauffeur Manuel. Goed verzorgde en mooie tour door de Douro vallei, leuk dorpje Amarante, lekkere lunch (je kon niet kiezen terwijl die indruk wel werd gewekt door je voorkeur aan te geven) met genoeg wijn. Rondleiding wijn plantage en fabriek en natuurlijk t proeven van de port was goed verzorgd. Toen de boottocht over de rivier in Pinhao was erg mooi. what an amazing tour! Andrea, our guide, was so friendly an accommodating. The day was long, but there were stop offs, sites to see and facilities on the way. Lunch was lovely and they even arranged a completely vegan meal for me that wasn't just bread or potatoes. The wine was delicious, but it would have been nice if more was offered. 1 bottle of red and 1 white to share between 8 on a wine tour is a bit stingey. The port tasting later on was amazing and our speaker was so friendly and informative. Water was provided as it was 40 degrees and we were moved into the shade as much as possible. The boat ride at the end was stunning and really peaceful. Brilliant way to spend the day and I highly reccomend this tour

Disfrutamos mucho del Tour Histórico del Valle del Duero y de nuestro guía Felipe. El grupo era pequeño y no nos sentimos apurados mientras visitabamos todos los lugares. El almuerzo se sirvió en un lugar elegante. Incluía sopa, plato principal, postre, café y vino. A todos nos sirvieron lo mismo, pero estaba delicioso. La visita a la bodega fue muy informativa y catamos tres vinos diferentes. Hicimos el crucero en un bote pequeño que lo hizo muy especial. Definitivamente fue una buena oferta por el precio. Mi única sugerencia sería dar algún tipo de descuento a los adolescentes ya que no beben.

It was okay

Our guide and driver were great. However, the microphone was intermitantly working so for 99 percent of the tour, only the front of the bus heard what was being said. We visited the office two days prior and asked for fish as our meal. When we got there we were served soup, some sort of tasteless egg dish with three small patatoes and rice. Not very apealing and probaly worth five Euros or less. Other than that, it was okay. We met very nice people from different countries.

Okay Tour

This was a large group tour and I felt it was very rushed. We met at the office at 8:30 and thought that's when the tour would start, but we had to go pick up people from their hotels. Each place we went to was rushed. I get that there's a schedule to keep, but it's hard to take everything in when it's go, go, go. At the restaurant for lunch, it took longer for us to get our desserts and coffees, but our tour guide didn't say anything to the servers. As soon as we got our coffees, it was time to go so some us (almost a whole table) did not get to enjoy our coffees. Next time, I would choose a smaller group tour that just visited the vineyards so there is not so much rushing. There was good music in the minivan.

Anabela speaking both French and English was very impressive and she provided a lot of information & answered all questions. Initially I was not sure whether I will take this tour. I was a single traveller. But I booked myself anyway . The guide (Jose M and Mayken) was very good, soft spoken and though I was travelling alone he asked several times during the tour if everything was ok. The first stop was a village with a fascinating church. The regional lunch was delicious to say the least and then we went for the wine tasting and the cruise. The cruise in the Douro river was relaxing and the weather was intoxicating. We returned to Porto around 7 pm. I am glad I did the trip and Duoro Valley trip is highly recommended to see the beauty of the region.

Ce tour vous permet de voir l’église d’Amarente, de bien manger un repas traditionnel , de voir une vue magnifique sur la vallée de Douro, de visiter une magnifique vignoble Domaine Sao Luiz , et de faire une dégustation de 1 vin et de 2 porto. Finalement de faire une petite croisière en bateau sur le Douro. En plus notre guide Antonio Bras a été super , même si notre tour était pour l’anglais et l’espagnol, il nous a fait plaisir pour nous la traduire aussi en français , car nous avons effectuer notre réservation seulement la veille . Idéal de la réserver minimum 48 heures avant pour avoir le choix de la langue. The perfect tour

Maria and Steve provided a surreal experience through beautiful towns and landscapes. A highlight was the viewpoint at the top of the valley. The lunch was excellent (hope you like cod) and the port tasting was a perfect finisher. It was a shame I was so full and relaxed I slept through the whole boat ride! Estuve de visita en Oporto por un día, el tour fue perfecto para poder conocer los puntos más importantes de la ciudad. Visitamos en camión los principales puntos, luego hicimos una degustación de vinos deliciosos, viajamos en barco a conocer los puentes que son una belleza y terminamos con una visita a Foz. Recomiendo mucho este Tour para tener una pincelada de lo más importante. Mi tour fue guiado por María, una chica sumamente preparada, domina todos los temas históricos de la ciudad, además de dominar el inglés, español y portugués. Ella súper amable, alegre y tiene una vocación de servicio excepcional. Nuestro conductor Mikel fue siempre muy amable y nos llevó a todos lados a tiempo y seguros. Fabulous tour!

We just returned from our full day Douro Valley tour and it was awesome! We don’t normally leave reviews, but felt we had to for this one! Our guide Tiago shared his EXPERT knowledge of the wines, the ports and the history of the region. We were also glad to have Silvo, an EXPERT driver who kept us on schedule and arriving at all stops safely. Even with a bit of rain, this was a tour not to be missed!

This was a very positive experience. The driver Paulo was excellent, our guide Isabella was as sweet and attentive as they come. Lunch was better than expected. One small winery and one much more grand where lunch was served. Loved loved visiting Amadante town . Glad we picked this tour, esp because we aren’t big drinkers so 2 wineries was enough - mom and daughter (22) trip. We both loved the boat cruise. Just enough time 50 minutes. Very good!

Amazing tour, both Lucas our driver and Paul our guide, made this experience stand out for us. Very knowledgable, answered any questions we had, and got us to all our stops safely and on time. I'd highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience the Duoro valley beyond doing wine tastings. This tour did have wine with lunch and a tasting of 3 wines, but the environment is more focused on learning about the history of the valley and their current agriculture practices. Only feedback I would give is offer more water on the trip, or advise people to bring more with them.

Best and surprisingly fun

This was very unexpected by me. I did not think I will enjoy this so much. Breaks to tour around by myself the amazing towns of Douro valley, great port and lunch experience at an ancient winery and finish with a fun boat trip down the river. Tonia the instructor did great job in both taking care of us and explaining about the area and its history which was enlightening. She extremely friendly and of service. The early Sunday start was a bit challenging especially since we didn’t manage to have breakfast but once we stopped in Amarente and had coffee and delicious pastries the day just got better and better. Our guide Isabel was very informative friendly and responsive to people’s needs. She made a particular effort with the different dietary choices of the tour attendees which was much appreciated. The only challenge was finding ourselves at the very back of the bus for the first half of the tour which was like being on a roller coaster but a very kind couple swapped with us so the 2nd half of the day was very comfortable. A fantastic tour. This tour won’t disappoint! We had a fantastic tour guide Isabel and a driver Joao Isabel who was very knowledgeable gave us lots of historical and cultural information and was more than happy to answer questions. We wanted to see the Douro valley and take in the scenery, so the tour achieved that. It’s a long day, but comfortable on the air conditioned minibus with a very knowledgeable and fun guide (André). It is a little rushed but it’s a long way out to Piñhao where you pick up the boat for the 50 minute river trip. We had a quick morning stop for coffee in Amarante. Lunch location was idyllic but food was disappointing although there was plenty of wine to wash it down with. The Quinta stop again was an idyllic location but the tasting was hardly worth it and you won’t learn too much - 3 small glasses and a very quick talk from a guide. We would recommend this trip if you want to see a snapshot of the Douro Valley and overall it was exceptional value for money. Thank you to André for making it a great day out

It was a good tour but if you are going to offer the cultural experience of going to Amarante village, you should allow sufficient time for something other than getting a coffee and pastry to go and a bathroom stop, seriously. The vineyard tour was very pleasant and the boat tour as well. Maybe opt for a picnic basket at the vineyard and skip the homey lunch to have more time in Amarante. Bus was adequate and the pickup very responsible

Really enjoyed the trip , scenery amazing , found not enough time anywhere, 15 minutes on Amarante was not enough , no time for coffee or a look around , lunch lovely , again on port tasting 10 mins tasting time not enough & rush again to boat trip piled on last minute onto a very full boat ! Manuel & Tiago our guide & driving were amazing , think it was picking up people from the hotels that lost us time , maybe they should be picked up earlier or not at all ! Overall we enjoyed our day

Pedro and our driver Michael were both wonderful! They explained everything along the way and were extremely knowledgeable, friendly, fun, and engaging. The winery was delicious and interesting to learn about the Porto-making process and the towns/cities we stopped to visit were charming and historically beautiful. Perhaps one area of improvement, completely beyond our tour guide’s control, was that the lunch at the restaurant could’ve been more to our liking, but not a big deal as the trip throughout the day was wonderful. A lovely morning stop in Amarante before stunning views of the Douro Valley and River and a delicious lunch, wine, dessert and coffee at Restaurant S. Leonardo. The little afternoon cruise on the Douro River followed by port tasting at Croft Winery was a perfect way to finish the day before our comfortable ride back to Porto.

If you have dietary requirements, this tour is not for you

I requested the vegetarian meal and once there was offered either the side dishes or an omelet. I told Alex our guide that I would like the omelet. He mistakenly thought I said I wanted only the side dishes so after watching everyone eat for a half-hour I found Alex our tour guide and asked him about my omelet and was told about his error. I managed to get a potato and some lettuce that was left over. For the price I paid for this trip, I was totally ripped off. I feel I should be compensated for his error but does not look like this will happen from this company. This was an expensive potato and lettuce. Also we booked the English tour and the tour was given in Spanish and English. So even if you think you are getting an single language tour, this is not the case.

A fantastic day except for one thing. The tour guide was a very unsafe driver to the point where I thought she was going to flip the van. She drove way too fast, tailgated, and even passed cars on blind curves. I tell you this because you don't want an unqualified and dangerous driver killing herself and your customers. Please take this comment very seriously because we really felt our lives were in danger. I'd give you 5 stars were it not for the transportation horror.

Wonderful day in the Douro

We booked the Douro Valley "Historical Tour" and it was a great tour. Our guide, Paulo (JP) Castro, was wonderful! He was funny and we were really at ease with him. We were only 7 people on the tour so it felt like a private tour. It was a long day (and a hot one) but it was worth the time. At each stop, Paulo would give us a brief description of the place and then leave us time to stroll around to take picture. The food and wine at the restaurant was really good and plentiful. Il was a great day and I think our guide had a lot to do with it! I would recommend this tour to anyone.

After a day of waiting for trains, buses and the metro in Lisboa, this was a welcome change. Our tour guide Andres Vidal was congenial and thoughtful. After reading many reviews we booked this tour at the recommendation of our hotel concierge and David's review above swayed our decision! I liked how diverse the activities were. Our guide (Silvia and Isabelle?) was very knowledgeable, congenial, and was helpful answering any questions and helping us practice the little Portuguese we knew. Amarante was beautiful and historical, we had a great view of Douro for lunch, and the wine tasting was great too. Would highly recommend to any newcomers to Portugal- it helps giving the some foundation to springboard the rest of your trip without feeling too much like an American tourist :-).

I am Portuguese and made this trip with a Spanish friend. We loved it. Visiting Amarante was really nice and refreshing. The views of the Douro were seen from superb spots and the cruise in the Douro was very pleasent too. Our guide Cláudia, who also droves us to and from Porto, spoke in English. She was very knowledgeable of the sites and lands we drove through, but also of any other subject we discussed informally too. Douro tour to Pinhao

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, we did the Douro tour to Pinhao. Tiago Santos, our guide picked us up at our hotels and kept a lively informative patter throughout our trip to our first stop at Amarante where we visited the church and walked along the old Romanesque bridge. After this brief stop, we continued through the countryside to the city of Lamego where we visited the Nossa Senhora dos Remedios Shrine at the top of a hill. A visit to the beautiful church there was completed with a walk down the steps to the city square. We then had a delicious Portuguese lunch before continuing on to Pinhao where we took a 45 minute cruise on the Douro river. Ending our stop in Pinhao with a tour and tasting at the Roeda Wine Estate - Croft- Taylor’s Group. Throughout the day, Tiago answered questions and told us many interesting facts about the port wine industry and the local area, pointing out sites of interest as we travelled. Before heading back to Porto, he drove up some fascinatingly narrow roads to a stunning lookout over the valley. It was an indication of Tiago’s desire to give us all a rich and varied experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him as he was not only knowledgeable but extremely personable as well

We had a fantastic guide--Miguel--who was professional, humorous, knowledgeable, and a great driver. His English was better than many native speakers and he switched between English and French gracefully, keeping all of the people on the tour fully informed and involved. The van was practically new, immaculately clean, and Miguel's microphone was crisp. The Douro Valley is just drop dead gorgeous; don't waste your time trying to photograph it. Just soak it in and buy postcards later. The lunch was Portuguese home cooking--wood oven roasted chicken and veal and potatoes--and served with wine. The vineyard we visited (Croft) must have just remodeled their visitor center--it was lovely (try the Rose port--I didn't know such a thing existed). If you have the time, then I urge you to take a day trip to Douro Valley.

Akshay and I used Living Tours to book our day trip. We were picked up promptly at 8:10AM in a very comfortable shuttle bus by Christian, our warm, informative tour guide. It takes about an hour and a half to get to Douro Valley, but Christian was very attentive and passionately shared the Portuguese history and traditions with us. The website details all the stopping points, and we followed the itinerary pretty closely. When we arrived in Galafura, we were disappointed to see that the fog was impeding the famous viewpoint that this region is known for. Christian reassured us that the view would come, but we were feeling pretty dejected in the moment. You could barely see 5 feet in front of you! Anyways, we went to lunch and had an amazing Portuguese meal with unlimited wine. When our lunch was ending, I happened to look out the window, and I was just blown away! The fog ended up clearing and we were able to get an amazing glimpse of the Douro Valley (featured picture!). I was on cloud nine! I think we all were! After we took a million photos, we were then taken to Pinhão, where we enjoyed a scenic boat cruise, allowing our food bellies to settle for an hour. We ended the tour at the beautiful Croft Winery (also in Pinhão) and had the opportunity to go on a tour and enjoy a few sips of the different ports they had to offer. The day went by super fast, and I loved that we were able to see a lot! If you’re more interested in wine tasting, Living Tours has other day trips they do offer. Akshay and I wanted to see the Douro Valley region, so we chose this one instead.

We took part in a Douro Valley tour in November. Our guide was Tiago and thanks to him we had an unforgettable trip. We enjoyed every moment, because he is not just a perfect driver, but he has a good sense of humour! Furthermore he’s very friendly and has a deep knowledge of wines. We are Hungarian and he knows a lot of facts about our famous wines (tokaji) and he explained everything what is the difference between Port Wine and Hungarian Wines. We highly appreciated it!

Beautiful day in a beautiful landscape!!

I did this tour with Tiago, which was a great guide! He was all the time explaining to us facts about the wine, Porto area or simply Portugal, even when he was driving he explained every place we were driving through, which I appreciated very much! The landscape was breathtaking!! And it was even better with Tiago's soundtrack :) It was a great day and I would recommend it to everyone! My only remark is the lunch, which I think it was quite poor, it would be great to have some salad and fish.

Full day douro Valley Tour

This was a lovely experience for our group - an excellent and friendly guide Christian, comfortable modern van, wine tasting and visit to winery, amazing views, visit to Amarante and Pinhao and also a boat trip- all in 10 hours. It was really worth it and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The tour guide was outstanding and kept it interesting all the way. Thank you.

I have had in all my travels. Our friendly and professional guide and expert driver, João kept our small group of seven well informed and his charming colleague, Sofia made the day even more enjoyable. The scenery is spectacular and the amount of time allocated to each place we stopped at was just right. I would definitely recommend this tour as a way to see the beautiful Douro Valley.
