Full description

The building that today houses the Museo Nacional del Prado was designed by architect Juan de Villanueva in 1785. It was constructed to house the Natural History Cabinet, by orders of King Charles III.

However, the building's final purpose – as the new Royal Museum of Paintings and Sculptures – was the decision of the monarch's grandson, King Ferdinand VII, encouraged by his wife Queen Maria Isabel de Braganza.

The Museo Nacional del Prado opened to the public for the first time in November 1819.

The Museum's first catalog, published in 1819, included 311 paintings, although at that time its collection comprised just over 1,510 pictures from the various Reales Sitios (Royal Residences).

It is down to them that nowadays we can contemplate in the Museum as greatest masterpieces as The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch, The Nobleman with his hand on his Chest by El Greco, Las Meninas by Velázquez and The Family of Carlos IV by Goya.

The visit will take place in chronological order, starting with the exhibit hall where we will find J. Bosch masterpieces (El Bosco) (1450-1516).

You  will then move on to the rooms dedicated to El Greco (1540-1614): The gentleman's hand on his chest, The Trinity, Christ embraced the cross and The Annunciation. Then you will appreciat Velázquez (1599-1660) with the famous art of The Worship, Drunkards, Equestrian Portraits, the Forge of Vulcan, The Christ, The spinners, Spears and Las Meninas.

It ends with Goya (1746-1828) showing the draws of The family of Carlos IV Pictures, The Shootings of May 2, Pestles and Black Paintings.

Fantastic Art Adventure
I loved it! The building itself is super fancy. Inside, there are so many cool artworks. I also found out they have special exhibitions that change sometimes, showing different artworks. It's like a surprise bonus! Recommend!

From an art lover with love
As an art lover I was overwhelmed by the quality of the paintings (mostly Prado displays paintings). Goya room was extraordinary. Bosch, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Dürer, Titian, Murillo, Velázquez and many others. We could see much more but we will need 2 full days. The guide was kind and well informed.

best way of not waist your time on cues
In the first day we arrive to the Prado Museum around 9 a.m but the enormous cue made us give up. We estimate that would stay there until enter about 3h. We rethink our plan and decide to buy the entrance online and with a guide. Next day we return better prepared. We skip the line and follow our guide. Well informed tour and spare some time with the orientation inside the museum. Don´t waste your time on cues, try to buy your entrance online with guide or not.

Fantastic colections
Prado is without any doubt one of the top museums in Europe, maybe in the whole world. With more than 1000 works of art it is impressive for the choice it offers. Our tour took about 2 hours and we only saw some of the masterpieces. As our guide explain each painting has it own history and to name them all it would take years. Great tour to do if you done have so much time to spare but I advise to take the whole day to see more.
