This exciting private journey to Guimarães starts after your guide collects you from your accommodation in Porto.
We will go towards the beautiful and historic city of Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal and a World Heritage Site, since 2001. This was the city where the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, was born. The history of Guimarães is related to the foundation of the national identity and the Portuguese language, in the XII century.
"Aqui Nasceu Portugal" ("Portugal Was Born Here") is written on the medieval walls of the historic center. With a harmonious and well preserved patrimonial set, in Guimarães you will find a lot to explore!
In this private tour, we will have the opportunity to enter and explore the Castle of Guimarães, the 10th-century national symbol. From the outside, its medieval structure looks impressive; on the inside, you can have stunning views over the city. The Castle, located on top of a hill and surrounded by a beautiful park, is perfect for a walk around it! Truly magical!
Our day will continue passing through The Palace of Bragança Dukes. Here, your private guide will introduce you to this enchanting building and explain the several details of this wonderful medieval palace, most noticeable for its excess of tall red brick chimneys.
Later, behold the old medieval city. We will have enough time to get lost and discover the surprising corners of the city's historical centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire this so beloved Portuguese city while enjoying a glass of Vinho Verde (Green Wine), very appreciated in the area.
It's now time to explore two of the most atmospheric squares, the Largo da Oliveira and the Praça de Santiago, separated by the old council chambers building. Sounds perfect for medieval cities lovers! Why don’t you give it a try?
