Full description

Gil Eannes was a Portuguese hospital-ship. It began its activity as a hospital in 1955, supporting for decades the Portuguese bacalhoeira fleet that operated on the banks of Terra Nova and Greenland. The reconversion has transformed it into a museological space, integrating exhibition halls, a meeting room, and a souvenir shop. It is currently anchored in the fishing port in Viana do Castelo.

The new space is endowed, among other valences, with multimedia equipment, support areas for entrepreneurship and nautical economy and several interactive audiovisual experiences.

  • Free Visit (not guided)

In this activity, the visitor can freely move around the bounded path of the Museum Ship, where you have the opportunity to know the functionalities of spaces such as bridge, kitchen, bakery, engine room, doctor's office, operative block, wards, several cabins, and chapel.

  • Guided Visit

This activity consists of a brief historical introduction in the Sala José Hermano Saraiva and then begins the museological visit to the spaces of the Ship. Explore all the corners of this stunning hospital-ship with the explanations of a local and expert guide.

Impressive Historical Ship
On our vacations in Portugal, my husband and I visited this impressive ship on our visit to Viana do Castelo. He's fanatic about the navy so this was a delight for him! very informative experience on a very well preserved historical ship!
