Top things to see and do in Granada

What strikes travelers most about Granada is its distinct Moorish culture. Although travelers mainly visit Granada in order to discover its biggest tourist attraction, the Alhambra, we recommend you to spend more time on this city to find out its hidden gems. Hopefully, our tips will inspire your trip!

La Alhambra

No surprises, Alhambra is a mandatory stop. This complex of palaces is the most important monument of Andalusia and one of the most visited in Spain. Its opulently decorated rooms and superb gardens represent the finest achievements of Moorish style in the world.

Top tips for your visit to the Alhambra:

Buy your ticket in advance, if you want to guarantee your seat on this famous monument, you will need to buy a ticket well ahead of time. Believe us, they sell out fast!

IMPORTANT INFO: Your ticket in Alhambra has an entry time to the Nasrid Palaces and not to the Alhambra complex in general. This palace may only be seen on time-slot tickets. We strongly recommend arriving at the Nasrid Palaces first and then explore the other parts of the Alhambra.

You can choose between a self-guided tour or a guided tour with a professional guide.

If you prefer to take your time and explore by yourself the entire complex of the Alhambra, buy a ticket with an audio guide system. Do your research at home and learn the full history of this building on your tour.

If you prefer having an expert guide explain to you in detail the Alhambra history book a ticket with this option to take advantage of a full experience on this amazing monument.

The Cathedral and the Royal Chapel

The Cathedral of Santa María de la Encarnación is a great example of Renaissance art. Built to celebrate the victory of Christian Spain over the Moors, it stands on the site of a former mosque. The most striking fact about the cathedral is the incredibly long time it took to build. Work on the cathedral began on 15th March 1523 and it was not completed until 1704, 180 years later.

The Royal Chapel is connected to the cathedral and is the final resting place of two notable historical figures from Spain. This chapel holds the remains of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile (who was initially laid to rest in the Convent of San Francisco in the Alhambra), along with the bodies of Queen Joanna IPhilip I and Prince Miguel da Paz.

Albaicín

This is probably the most popular and typical neighborhood of Granada. It is here that you can soak up the atmosphere of the city old Muslim quarter. There are cobbled streets form a labyrinth of whitewashed houses, walled gardens and little squares lined with tapas bars. Since Albaicín district is situated on a hill in front of the Alhambra, you will be able to capture the best images.

Flamenco Show in Sacromonte neighborhood

Well, we say that Albaicín is probably the most popular neighborhood of Granada because Sacromonte also owns an important role in city history. Its colorful gypsy quarter is fascinating, some houses are decorated with vibrant handcrafted ceramics. Sacromonte is home to many cave venues where flamenco is performed for centuries. If you are in for a flamenco show in Granada, Sacromonte is the best choice!

Tapas

Ah, Andalusia! A region full of surprises, great surprises and some, very tasteful! We can’t get tired of tapas, those delicious small portions of Spanish food full of taste! You probably know what we are talking about, if you don’t, you really should give it a try! Albaicín offers a range of a great bar!

Arab baths

Granada preserves some of the oldest baths and the hammams in Spain, but what’s a hammam? It is a steam bath and is made up of different baths each at different temperatures in several rooms and is a very traditional way of bathing and the massage. Sounds perfect, don’t you think?

Say hello to your Granada trip!
