The Roman Galleries of Rua da Prata, discovered in the subsoil of the downtown in Lisbon in 1771, following the earthquake of 1755, open to the public this week on 29, 30 and 31 March, from 10 am to 7 pm. Reservations are limited, but by the end of the year, there will be a new opening!

The Roman Galleries of Lisbon are hidden in a trap door on Rua da Conceição, right next to our agency Living Tours in Lisbon. The complex was initially identified as Roman Baths - the ancient Roman Baths of Olisipo. In the 19th century, the water was used to guarantee the public supply to local populations. These galleries were then known as the Conservas de Água da Rua da Prata.

Nowadays, it is known that the whole infrastructure is actually a cryptoportic, a support platform for the construction of large buildings, often compensating for a slope on the ground with little geological stability.

There are eight visitable galleries that extend for a course of about 40 meters, in a straight line. At the end of the route is the Galeria das Nascentes, known as Olhos de Água. This is where the fissure that partially floods the whole area of the galleries stays. The galleries are flooded during most of the year, something fundamental for the maintenance of its original structure. The Lisbon City Hall and local firefighters ensure the permanent drainage and pumping of water on site.
