Discover the story behind the most traditional meal in Porto
Hi! I’m Cláudia one of Living Tours guides in Porto.
I was born in this city known as “Invicta” (unbeaten in English) and I’m very proud of being a real “tripeira”!
What’s a “Tripeiro”? Is the nickname given to those who are born in Porto! Do you want to know the origin of this epithet?
The story goes that in the Age of Portuguese Discoveries, it was in a shipyard of Lordelo do Ouro (near the mouth of the river Douro), in Porto, where were built almost every ship used in the conquer of Ceuta (today a Spanish territory located in Northwest Africa border with Morocco) in 1415.
After a request launched by Prince Henrique, the Navigator, the inhabitants supplied the ships with everything they had, offering all the good meat to the brave navigators going in search of the African coast. The locals were left with only the animals' tripes. Rather than dying from starvation, they created a very poor meal only with animals tripes and dark bread. Nowadays, the recipe was refined and is called “Tripas à Moda do Porto” (animals tripes in Porto’s style). It consists of a stew with animals tripes, beans and carrots accompanied by white rice.
Are you curious to taste this typical Porto meal? According to tradition, you can find it every Thursdays in restaurants in the city.
