Welcome to the Wine Harvest in the Douro Valley
We are at the beginning of September, the long-awaited harvest season in the Douro. It is undeniable that these days are the most special for lovers of the Douro Valley.
The Douro Valley declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and one of the oldest wine regions in the world (since 1756), perfectly combines the green and gold of the hills with the course of the river of the same name. It is able to surprise the most demanding visitors, the most difficult tourists to impress, but the truth is that no one can resist the charm of this region.
This is the best time to discover the true soul of the Douro, to unveil the culture and traditions of its people and to be impressed by the vineyards that will create the famous Port Wine. Harvesting has its own singularity: workers and volunteers gather together in a festive celebration, among countless songs, instruments, and colors, at every stage of the process. First, the grapes are harvested and transported to wineries where they are totally crushed by the feet of the people. Then, the wort (which will give rise to the wine) is moved to the cellars where the process of wine fermentation begins until it is stored in barrels of wood or other materials.
Harvesting is one of the most enduring traditions in Portugal and the wines that are born from there are real milestones for the culture of the country. There are many programs to visit the Douro harvests specially prepared for tourists. Come with us and discover the beauty of this valley, which has both enchanting and wonderful:
